Deep Water Running
What We Do In This Class
The AUT Millennium Deep Water Running (DWR) classes are designed and led by Kiri Price, who has been based at AUT Millennium since 2009. Kiri is a qualified and experienced running coach, personal trainer, swim teacher and Aqua instructor. She has completed over 200 marathons and uses DWR in not only her own running career, but with many clients to help them succeed and reach their athletic goals.
DWR is biomechanically the closest cross-training activity to land-based running. As water is nearly 700 times more resistant than air there are strength gains to be achieved alongside cardiovascular benefits. You’re vertically suspended in 2.2m of water which makes this a non-weight bearing exercise. It’s gentle on your joints (ankles, knees and hips) plus you’ll get a great workout for your core and upper body.
DWR is running specific and perfect for those who wish to supplement their current training load, add in running specific active recovery, improve or maintain current fitness levels or be able to continue training whilst injured*.
It is recommended to attend one of the 10.45am classes (easy – medium intensity) first to learn the correct technique and see how this form of exercise feels for you. As you are able to work at your own pace, the classes are suitable for ages 16+ and all abilities.
Please note, you will be wearing a flotation belt but a certain level of water confidence is required as our pool is 2.2m deep.
*If you are currently injured or have a medical condition, please discuss participating in a Deep Water Running session with your health care provider prior to attending to ensure this form of exercise is suitable for you.
Deep Water Running is held in the National Aquatic Centre Main Pool.
Please Bring Along
Togs, towel and your water bottle. Flotation belts are available for you to use or you can bring your own. Goggles and swim caps are not required.
